My EFC (Estimated Family Contribution) is 2971. How much money (if any) does that qualify me to get for college in financial aid? What are Pell Grants exactly? Does my EFC qualify me for Pell Grants? What else might my EFC qualify me for?

I know several people who are currently in debt over 50k+. Many of them I know are majoring in unmarketable majors like philosophy.
Do students make this decision out of ignorance of finance? or do they know what they are getting themselves into?
