Born in the Philippines, Pearl Cervi grew up as one of several children of a poor Catholic family. Society at the time was marked by a sharp contrast between the extremely poor and excessively wealthy. The unprivileged aspired to attain a high level of education to find a lucrative job; however, the prohibitive cost of schooling stood in the way of most. Since early childhood, Pearl had an affinity for numbers and an ambition to do well in her classes. When the time came for college, no matter the struggle for her family to afford it, she already knew that higher education would pay off in the long run. She intended to find a good job to help her parents and siblings financially. Although she later accomplished that goal, the changes in her life could not have been predicted, and required more effort and drive than simply getting a degree. Upon graduating from St. Paul University in the Philippines at 24, Pearl had difficulties finding a job in her own country. “I decided to leave because of all the political corruption; the government was disorganized and all the foreign aid went to the rich. Finding a good job in those conditions proved impossible.” She then moved to Hong Kong, where she lived and worked for nearly five years. Her contract allowed for just two visits back to the Philippines every two years, which meant much work and little comfort. Pearl’s group of friends started talking about Canada as a land of more opportunity. Keeping her parents and siblings in mind, she took this step away from Asia, far from her culture and all the people she knew. Luckily, Canada became what she expected. “I was very happy when I got there; I finally started using my education, which made me feel better about myself.” While holding an office job, Pearl also attended Toronto’s Humber College, hoping that a Canadian diploma would facilitate the process of obtaining citizenship, which would have made her life and work in North America far easier. After earning her second degree, in business management, Pearl decided to move once again, this time to start a family. Upon arrival in Phoenix, AZ, she was hired by a large bank as manager of entry-level positions, and quickly learned the frustrations of trying to reconcile employee wishes with company interests. As if living in a different culture and having to communicate in a secondary language weren’t enough, Pearl had to deal with the envy of coworkers and a lack of work ethic among subordinates. “As a foreigner entering the American business culture, I had things to prove. It was not easy; if you’re not tough enough, sometimes you’ll just cry.” Pearl’s mantra was already clear: “I’m not going to stop here, I need to get better than this; I need to prove to myself that I can do what others are doing.” After three years with the company, they promoted her to team leader. She discovered that the essentials of progressing in the corporate world are “the ability to manage and protect big networks of people, knowing how to generate revenue, doing error-free work, and being adaptable and competitive at all times.” Having mastered these skills, Pearl’s status at work becomes ever more significant. “I’m so lucky to have a job with this corporation, and am proud to have accomplished it by myself; I use my skills for something that I love.” Despite all of the effort and professional achievement, Pearl acknowledges her two children as her biggest success. Her son attends the local state university with a full merit-based scholarship, while her daughter is an honors student. About the difference between succeeding in the business world and in personal life, she maintains that “business has always set outlines and goals to achieve a certain outcome, while in a personal life you can have desires without always having complete control.” Pearl remains living proof that education and determination, not birthplace or family circumstances, are key to living a life filled with tangible accomplishment. The results can be as unforeseen as they are compelling.
